It’s fine though because he changes so much as a person later!!! I mean he grows up, he takes a job as potions professor at Hogwarts, then he uses his new found authority, as well as his wisdom, to bully 11 year old children! Literally threaten – and apparently be willing – to publicly kill their beloved pets! 

And, additionally, try as much as he could without actually flat out saying it to out Lupin as a Werewolf, something JK stated was akin to AIDS in terms of how people are seen/treated in the Wizarding world! 

Also, he purposefully destroys Harry’s only happy memories even though he knows he has had an abusive upbringing and only has a few!!

What a swell guy, you can see why you’re meant to like him at the end!!
