rian johnson’s assertions that kylo is meant to be seen as “relatable” and going through the trials of adolescence (despite being 30 years old and having become what he is around the age of 25), along with him labeling kylo and rey as “two halves of the protagonist” (not only erasing finn as the co-lead of the new trilogy, but insinuating the kylo is equally as sympathetic as rey) are incredibly disturbing to me because painting a violent, abusive, actually fascist white man well into his adulthood as someone that children can connect with is horrifying and the last thing we need right now given the state of things

also such a typical thing of portraying white men as much younger and
more immature than they actually are to protect them from the
consequences of their own actions. you can see it all over real life
as well, for example with donald trump jr. and the russia thing: he
isn’t an irresponsible adult who essentially committed treason,
he’s a good boy who was a bit over-enthuasiatic. it’s so
unsurprising that that same line of argumentation – he’s still
growing up, he has to be allowed to make mistakes – is going to be
used to excuse a 30 year old fictional fascist, but it makes me sick.

Just to reiterate: When Kylo Ren massacred a bunch of children without mercy, he was about twenty-fucking-five.

Not an angsty teen who was corrupted by Snoke, an adult who willingly gave in knowing what he would do because he didn’t feel like his parents loved him enough. He killed children and tried to kill Luke (you could actually classify the whole think as genocide) of his own free will.

Yes, free will. The Force Awakens shows that he is still perfectly capable of thinking and doing things for himself even after being part of the Dark Side for about 4 or 5 years.

All that because he wanted to spite Leia and Han for spending so much time leading and managing the Rebellion instead of him. Plenty of people have parents that are shit and aren’t around or don’t love them (though Kylo’s do love him, even after everything). Most don’t go around killing children and throwing a tantrum and yelling at their parents “look at what you made me do!”

Kylo is not at all sympathetic nor should he be proclaimed to be as such. He is a 30-year-old entitled white man who throws tantrums and kills people because it makes him feel powerful and special, and is obsessed with his war criminal grandfather and blames everyone else when he fucks up.
