Yesterday it was announced that Bishop Oscar Romero, martyred in 1980, will officially be made a saint in October!
Romero, a Bishop in El Salvador, was shot while giving Mass because of his speaking out against the violence of the country’s military government. His martyrdom was both a tragedy and inspiration for the people of El Salvador. With his canonization in October as St. Romero of the Americas, he will be the first Salvadorian saint.
