Is Eddy from eene bisexual or gay? Pls share your thoughts
Personally I just can’t tell. He’s not straight for sure, I’m not even going to write down reasons why I think he’s into his friend, that’s just canon. But I want to talk about his lack of interest in girls.
When he expresses interest in girls it’s more about his image than anything else. He thinks there is a certain way he should act and being all about girls is one of them (all those magazines etc). However on Valentine’s Day he opens a kiss booth specifically to earn money and in “May I have this Ed” episode doesn’t even think about asking girl to go with him. Not to mention after this event decide to give up girls altogether.
His infatuation with Nazz is something that would indicate that he is actually interested in girls but he never…do anything about it? When he has a chance to kiss her under the Mistletoe he doesn’t. He doesn’t really notice her that much, it’s more like he knows he supposed to have a crush on girl and this girl from neighborhood is pretty and everyone else already has a crush on her so it’s how it should be, right?
I don’t know, I think it’s most likely he’s actually gay.
Side note: it’s not a prove or anything, but his fashion sense and general liking of 80s aesthetic made me question his sexuality since long ago.
He is the Ed most likely to be gay based on canon to me, but I think he’s bisexual. He is the first character I head-cannoned as bi from the show, actually. His physical reaction to girls is really strong. He could be homoromantic, but he is sexually attracted to girls without a doubt in my mind. Whenever he expresses these feelings it’s never for any kind of benefit of someone else; he turns completely stupid at the sight of a pretty girl in a pretty natural way for a 12-year-old boy. And boys don’t tend to have such a strong, innate desire for the sex they aren’t attracted to based on societal influence, while girls tend to more easily fluctuate and become victims of heteronormativity. This was done as a study where men and women were shown three kinds of porn; straight, gay and lesbian. Women tended to feel some sense of stimuli from all three, to varying degrees. The men identifying as straight were measured as feeling absolutely NO stimuli from the gay porn, but they did for the other two, and vice versa with gay men. And what specifically does Eddy have a great deal of featuring women? Porn. I know this is tumblr, and there a lot of gender lines blurred in this 20gayteen, and Eddy has definitely blurred those lines before, which is great, but I’m just analyzing this from a typical standpoint of what I’ve observed in my lifetime. There are plenty of guys who are the exceptions, and Eddy could be one of them, but his gut reactions to the physical aspects of women and the way he’s absolutely dumbfounded by Nazz whenever she’s remotely flirty, even when they’re alone, make me think he will never be turned off by women.
Also, I’m sorry fandom because you all interpret this scene way differently than I do, but Eddy defensively saying “I’m done with dames!” because they rejected him at the dance is way more indicative of something an insecure straight guy (or bisexual) would say than the popular theory that it’s the opposite. He wouldn’t care enough to swear them off if he wasn’t genuinely offended by the lack of female attention he was getting.
Please anyone correct me if I’m wrong or am saying something that could be misconstrued. Eddy could be gay, but based on the way he acts in canon it’s unlikely.
And Eddy also could be straight, but based on the way he acts in canon it’s unlikely lol.
Wow, that was very detailed and in depth analysis! Thank you for pointing these things out. It actually convinced me.
To be honest that was also my conclusion when I first started rewatching EEnE and after seeing that the character that I remembered from my childhood as wannabe womanizer shows so many signs of not being so straight I thought “oh cool, he may be bi” but then I got to later seasons where gay feelings intensifies and he rarely showes that kind of interest in girls (maybe it’s because magazines weren’t mentioned again and we didn’t see so many shots of his room filled with tissues idk) and it made me think that maybe girl-crazy phase is over for good.
But you’re probably right and his comment about being done with dames comes from hurt pride and maybe annoyance that the only girls interested in him are Kankers.
Speaking of Kankers, as a kid I used to ship them with Eds and later was even happy to see so many fanarts picturing their relationships. But now I’m mostly irritated that they’re so popular among fans, have the most cosplays and art (ridiculously fetishized may I add). Their designs were really cool so I get it, but after rewatching the series I feel like shipping them with Eds is somehow wrong, they did antagise them for so long after all. Off all three sisters May is showned to be the most..redeemable but I can’t see Marie and Lee changing much in the future. It’s not like they’re completely evil as BPS shows us but still.
Sorry for getting out of track I forgot what I was talking about
And you’ve touched on another one of my favorite topics: The Kankers. Lol. So I just have to add that I do love them as characters, and I still ship them with the Eds, (I ship a lot of things though), but NOT in an abusive way (Well, Eddy/Lee is just meh to me). They would have to completely redeem themselves in order for me to want them to date the Eds.
But I also don’t want a redemption for them just so I can ship them with the Eds, I want it because I just really felt so sorry for these girls and really love them. There weren’t that many unique and interesting female cartoon characters in a realistic cartoon like EEnE back then, and one of them was all punk-rock too?? I immediately connected with Marie, suffice it to say. But one thing that was clear is that these girls were abused. They way their mom and them talk about men is very upsetting, and they are written with the kind of behavior that an abuse victim would exhibit. Not only that, but their mom has completely skewed their image of men too.
Is this an excuse for how they treat the Eds? Absolutely not. You know what is? Their age. They are 11-13, and that is the biggest redemptive quality for them to me. None of us are what we were like at that ages, and this show’s entire message was that kids are terrible in lots of different ways when they are younger, but what really counts is how you grow. That was what Bro represents, the adult that didn’t grow out of how terrible he was.
BPS cleared a path to redemption for ALL the characters, including the Kankers who, of course, were the only reason the Eds made it safely to Bro’s house, and that’s why I think they will want to atone for their behavior.
Sorry to hijack your post twice lol. I could go on about this show all day. And I can’t believe I convinced you with my previous analysis that’s awesome!
This is so true, I always feel bad for them when they show us how they live. Like, apart from all psychological issues, just how it’s clear they have no money and make laundry in that big bucket (I had broken washing machine once and had to do the laundry that way for a month it’s really tiring so seeing that scene made me sympathize with them a lot), have no real Christmas, no real home, even their iconic red polish nail turns out to be actually a red paint.
There is lots of cartoonish type of violence in this show but when watching as an adult I just can’t not see all this abuse and neglect those kids are experiencing. Sometimes I wonder “aren’t we overanalyze it?” But that’s why BPS is appreciated so much, some of those hints finally addressed in a serious manner, prove that it wasn’t just in viewers’ heads.
Don’t worry about hijacking my post, I’m glad we’re interacting~ I’ve been dying to talk about EEnE for some time.
This might be a bit of topic, but I also think a reason why the Kankers often target specifically the Eds, is because the Eds are also victims of child abuse. And I’m probably reading WAY too much into it with all of this, so sorry if it seems a bit too farfetched^^;
Ed seems to be a victim of parental favortism, with his parents always taking Sarah’s side, and with Sarah having a nice room with lots of toys, while Ed lives in a dirty basement. Some of the things he own, like all those movie tapes we see in the Halloween episode, probably belonged to his dad and were kept in storage in the basement. I think the reason behind the parental favortism is that his parents wanted a daughter; there is a scene in, I believe it was the episode, Dear Ed, where Ed finds a baby picture of himself wearing a pink bow.
Double D is a victim of neglect due to overworked parents; his parents are never home, leaving Double D to take care of the chores around the house, a lot of which a twelve year old child probably shouldn’t handle. His parents even have the entire bathroom removed without personally telling Double D, and just leaving another yellow sticky note. I do, however, think that Double D’s parents love him, as evidenced in the episode Mama’s Little Ed (I think it was) where we find out that Double D’s parents tuck him in at night. It is worth noting that in the episode Too Smart For His Own Ed, Double D is seen going to bed without his parents tucking him in, meaning that it might be a rare occassion, and that Double D didn’t seem to pay any mind to Eddy’s tired/annoyed attitude around tucking him in. This makes me think that on the rare occassions where Double D’s parents have time to tuck him in, they are so exhausted from work that they act like Eddy did there.
And Eddy is pretty much confirmed to be a victim of physical abuse at the hand of his brother, and there are even a few hints that his dad beat him too.
