Dear Americans,

The Fourth of July is coming up very soon. For a lot of you it’s a time to celebrate your freedom and independence and love for your country.

But fireworks, parties, patriotism, and copious amounts of alcohol make already stupid people do dangerous things.

The Fourth of July weekend is notorious for violence. In 2017 more than 100 people were shot over the holiday. 15 people were killed.

We know the social climate currently. We know what’s happening. We know who is being targeted. And we need to be there for them.

Do what you can. If there’s a protest happening, join it. If you have family members or neighbours who are at risk, check up on them. Help people escape escalating situations. Walk someone home. Spend the day calling your senators. Even small acts can make a huge impact.

You can’t celebrate freedom if so many of you aren’t free.
