The Wayúu or Guajiro people are an indigenous group located in the desert Guajira Peninsula in northern Columbia and Venezuela. You can read more about them here
Indigenous south american people are generally ignored and forgotten at best, and the Wayúu are having an incredibly hard time. They used to rely on assistance from the Venezuelan government for providing food and other necessities, but due to the current state of it, that support is now next to none. According to UNESCO, La Guajira is the second poorest region in Latin America after Haiti, and most of the world has not even heard of them.
If they’re known for anything in Latin America, it is for their beautiful handwoven bags that have been gentrified all over etsy. The real ones look like this:
You can buy Wayúu people’s bags from the nonprofit from wayuu to me or look into buying from ethical vendors like wayuutribe to help support them or donate to the Wayúu Taya foundation here and read about their projects to help them have better access to proper education, safety, and food.
