I’m posting this because it has sound samples for all the languages listed.
“Spoken until the great famine” no, English was forced on the irish by England. Teachers would beat students for speaking irish. They had irish classes in literal bushes to try and keep the language. We were treated as animals and weren’t seen respected until we sounded and acted English. Btw we were starved by the English, Irish farmers were forced to give up their crops to keep up their farms. Potatoes was one of the few things we had left to eat. When they went bad no one cared. If you were caught holding back your crops you’d be evicted and/or your house would be burnt down and /or you’d be sent to prison
At least half of these languages were forced to the brink by colonization and/or oppression, if not more. Just skimming– Wiradjuri, Basque, Choctaw, Irish/Gaelic, Saami, Ojibwe, Welsh, and probably most of the South American native languages on the list.
You can’t talk about language extinction without recognizing that in many cases it’s intentional cultural destruction.
