Ford government slashes income assistance hikes

Doug Ford’s government is cancelling the basic income pilot program and slowing down increases to income assistance.

It’s the latest in a fast-moving string of changes announced by the new Ontario government.

On Tuesday, Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod announced a review of the entire slate of income assistance programs provided by Ontario.

MacLeod called the programs, overseen by the previous Liberal government, a “mess” and “patchwork.”

She said the review will be done within 100 days.

In the March budget the Liberals announced they would raise income assistance rates by three per cent. MacLeod said that will be reduced to a 1.5 per cent increase.

More to come.

A 1.5% annual increase is, after accounting for inflation,

not truly an increase at all.  It is

a net cut.  It is not a ‘slowed increase’.  It is a CUT.

Ford is not ‘slashing hikes’.  He is cutting, albeit slowly, already-insufficient life-sustaining assistance to Ontario’s most vulnerable populations.

A large proportion of Ontario’s homeless population receive assistance from these programs, and yet remain homeless, because the assistance amounts fall well short of what it costs to actually live anywhere in Ontario.  And Ford and his Social Services Miser think those people are too well off.

Again.  This is a CUT.  And people will LITERALLY DIE as an inevitable consequence of this kleptocrat’s callous ideology.
