While I think the Liberals could do better in terms of environmental policies, I think it’s important to recognize that Alberta continues to depend heavily on oil and in a perfect world that economy diversifies but that isn’t possible overnight. Additionally, Canadian oil is some of the most accountable and responsible. Canadians not relying on and supplying oil won’t stop countries that do less. I struggle with this blog because you seem to think it has to be all or nothing.

I am not calling for overnight transitions off oil. That isn’t possible anywhere in the world. However several countries are planning to transition off oil completely in less than 20 years. That is possible in Canada too. Netherlands will soon ban all conventional oil based cars in its country. Renewable energy is booming. This is not the 1980′s. These alternatives do exist, right now.

In fact what the science says that if Oil Sands production does not stay flat and that the majority of oil stays in the ground, we have no chance of keeping Earth’s Climate at a safe level below 2 degrees C:

Actually IT WILL. Canada exports a phenomenal amount of oil around the world. Do you know what the entire point of the Kinder Morgan Oil Pipeline expansion is about? Shipping oil to China.

The Earth is a fixed system. It doesn’t matter whether oil is burned in Canada or China, it all goes to the atmosphere. Canada is major supplier of oil to the world. What Canada does or does not do with its vast oil reserves will impact the entire world.
