I usually walk everywhere with my headphones on, but I had them in my bag and I was reading a book on my phone instead (I do that when the foot traffic is light). A young Latina was coming down the street as I was coming up the avenue, and when she got to the corner a few paces ahead of me, she turned to walk in the direction I was going. We were traveling at the same speed, but since she was like ten paces ahead and it’s bright outside in the middle of the day, I didn’t feel the need to fall back or slow down to give her more space. At night, I try not to walk too close behind women just so they don’t feel like I’m any sort of threat.
We got to a corner and this dude standing outside of the bodega was like, “Slow down mama where you goin? You don’t have to work today, you can stop and speak.”
She didn’t break her stride. “I’m going to the gym.” The Walk sign was on, so I didn’t break mine either.
A block later, a young guy was coming toward us on the sidewalk riding his bike.
“What’s good shorty?”
She didn’t respond.
“Well you was lookin, you can say something, stuck up bitch.”
We kept walking.
In the middle of the next block, an older man was walking toward us and he put on a friendly smile and said, “Smile young lady, it’s a beautiful day.”
I don’t know if she smiled, but we kept walking. She went into the gym and I kept on toward where I was going thinking about how that was just five minutes of her day. How many other blocks of five minutes are just like that?
Only one of them was truly aggressive. The other two guys seemed nice enough and it felt more like a pleasant compliment. It felt like the kind of thing a guy says who argues with women online about catcalling. “We’re not all bad guys. We can’t even compliment women? We can’t even say something nice?”
No. You really can’t. I was annoyed in that five minutes and I just happened to be walking behind her with no headphones on. Can you imagine those five minutes over and over every day of your life? Nobody wants to be spoken to by strangers day in and day out forever regardless of what they’re saying.
So no. You can’t say anything. The quality of your life has not decreased because you aren’t allowed to say nice things to strange women on the sidewalk, but your silence greatly increases the quality of hers. So just be quiet, and let her go where she’s going.

In one episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine, they talk about how trans people have it difficult in prison. In the very next episode the sentence “Nothing is more attractive in a woman than the clear absence of a penis” is uttered.
It’s almost like B99 is a show made by liberals for liberals and its progressiveness is entirely performative.
Just want to point out since the post kind of glosses over the fact that the last sentence is uttered ironically by a gay character who is trying to pass as straight to distract a guard at a women’s prison. The running joke is that he believes straight people are transphobic and homophobic, so when he tries to pretend to be one, he acts that way. The joke is, no one around him acts like what he’s saying is off, making further commentary on how transphobic and homophobic our society is.
tumblr taking things out of context to vilify something good? its more likely than you think
hey guys! here’s some fun things i learned from this article about Dion Diamond:
he did these sit-ins by himself. like idk about you, but i always thought of sit-ins as organized by groups, what kind of bravery does it take, man
he didn’t tell anyone about it, like he was no glory-seeker about this. his parents didn’t even know until reporters started calling them up like “hey, did you know your son is in jail?
when someone called the cops he’d skedaddle out the back door although he was sent to prison multiple times
the last time he got arrested was in Baton Rouge, and the cops were so sick of him that they told inmates they’d put in a good word for anyone who gave Diamond a hard time. (the inmates didn’t take the bait.)
The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.
This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trump’s abuses of power and Republican legislation.
What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge voters’ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you haven’t voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, that’s all they need now to say you’re no longer registered and need to register again.
They’re deliberately counting on people assuming they’re still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out they’re no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.
And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply can’t always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.
This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. I’m not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:
If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.
Make sure you check it periodically because the newest voter roll purges likely haven’t happened yet.
IF VOTING DIDN’T MATTER, THEY WOULDN’T BE TRYING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR RIGHT TO DO IT.
I don’t need to even fact check to know bigskydreaming’s post is biased and full of nonsense. The voter purging was backed by the top courts and there’s pros and cons for such an effort. If your concerned it’s easy enough to check your status and ensure you can vote. Meanwhile be dubious of such elaborate explanations of the process.
Reblogging just because this last addition is so emblematic of the GOP’s base right now and sums them up better than anything anyone else could say about them.
“I don’t even need to fact check.”
“[This person] is biased and full of nonsense.”
“Be dubious of elaborate explanations.”
Jfc man, how was there any Kool-aid left for anyone else after you got done drinking it?
The new Venom movie has a scene with intense flashing lights (the lab entry scene) and I received no warnings and had to leave (just for that scene) as I am epileptic!!! PLEASE share this since I’ve seen NO warnings being shared and this is very important and can prevent people from having seizures etc during the film.
Those are all very good points! I may very well be wrong and she could be someone else, but I still think we can’t rely on 2D concepts to dismiss the theory. A lot of villains change from the conceptual change—and though these may be minute—they do make a big difference. Prior to season two, I saw a large portion of the fandom dismiss the notion of Gabriel being Hawkmoth simply because of a difference in jaw shape and skin tone.
The biggest thing to remember is Mayura needs to get the miraculous from Gabriel. It’s in his possession and there’s no way around it. The Agreste mansion is heavily fortified and with all sorts of security and cameras. We’ve seen the additional layer of security on Gabriel’s possessions as well—he’s simply too controlling and paranoid to be careless with a spare miraculous/the grimoire. The only person who can access everything without question or suspicion would be Nathalie. Even if she hasn’t been given the safe code for some reason, we’ve seen her in Gabriel’s presence while unlocking it in the Collector, she could easily bypass it.
Could Gabriel simply give it to someone else? Yes, he could. But I doubt that would happen as well. He trusts very few people and wouldn’t be careless with such a powerful tool. He would also compromise his identity, and after everything he’s done to conceal it, I doubt he would risk it. Nathalie is already aware and up to speed with the situation/his motives.
As for the name Mayura not being French, we need to take into consideration that conceptually it was supposed to be LePaon. Ladybug and Queen B aren’t french names either, despite the fact their wielders are. I think Zag is simply is trying to be a bit more creative—hence why all the new heroes aren’t simply given the French names for the animals they represent. Paon is also a masculine word in French, which could be why it was changed to alleviate confusion.
With all that being said, I wish Mayura was a WOC of Indian descent! If that happens to be the case it’s wonderful for representation, but not very good from a storytelling perspective. Adding a character last minute with no previous tie to the story doesn’t make sense—and it feels like they laid all the groundwork for Nathalie to take the mantle. I could be wrong though!
Thanks for the response! I personally think Gabriel and Hawkmoth look very similar, but I see your point. Concerning the names, english is a very international language, and I know from experience that a lot of europeans will incoporate english words as slang, but I can’t deny that there is a possibility that Natalie just has a big interest in hinduism maybe.
I actually like the idea of Natalie kinda of dethroning Gabriel and becoming the new big bad; it could make for some interesting stuff, but I personally still believe that Mayura is going to be indian
