just saw someone complaining that a bunch of people are getting into dnd now “solely because of the adventure zone”
i honestly cannot even fathom having a problem with that. like why don’t you want more people to enjoy the thing you love? its not a secret club y’all. dnd is popular as hell. and the mcelroys aren’t the first people to bend the rules to suit their needs.
let people like stuff. don’t gatekeep communities just because you feel like you’re above new fans that didn’t find the community the same way you did. chill. even if its just “a bunch of kids buying pretty dice and playing the game wrong.” get over yourselves.
there is literally no way to play d&d wrong if everyone is having fun. share our game or watch it die
You’re not really punk rock. You’re not a real metalhead. You’re not a real hippy. You’re not a real beatnick. You’re not a real … .
Fuuuck. Enough already.
I know people who got into D&D because of a romantic interest in another player. Or got into it because their older sibling needed another player. Or because their parents told them they had to do something social.
99.999% of the people acting as gatekeepers for the sanctity of the tabletop roleplaying hobby weren’t even around when D&D was first published. Just like the guardians of punk rock, metal, and every other cool thing that ever came along. The people who were there at the creation were busy making the thing, getting it out into the world, not wasting time determining who was in the in crowd and who wasn’t.
The people who spend their time trying to keep other people out are the people who showed up later and want to create a false exclusivity as some sort of marker of legitimacy.
Fuck that nonsense. Seriously. If you really love tabletop roleplaying, spread the joy, welcome others in, and take pleasure in what they bring to the hobby.
So, wait. A bunch of people, after being exposed to one D&D show or other (taz isn’t only game in town, so trying to place all the “blame” at its feet isn’t fair), thought it sounded like a fun time and decided to start playing D&D themselves? And this is a problem, how?
Who cares if this or that group doesn’t play how you like to play. Just be happy that people are out there playing D&D.
“"there is literally no way to play d&d wrong if everyone is having fun.”“
Thhhiisssssss this this this this this THISSSS!!!!
I wanted to start playing DnD because when I was little I saw that episode of Dexter’s Lab where he and some friends play it, and I thought it looked like a lot of fun
